How did Avkin start?

The University of Delaware appointed Amy Cowperthwait as a nursing simulationist, tasked with enhancing the learning experience in the lab. During a session focused on tracheostomy care, students entered and greeted the manikin, saying, “Hi, Mr. Jones. What is your name and date of birth?” Amy remained silent, as patients with tracheostomies are often unable to speak. The students, observing the unmoving manikin, exclaimed, “Oh my goodness, he’s dead!” and immediately initiated chest compressions. From her vantage point in the control room, Amy reflected on their approach, puzzled by their decision to perform CPR when the manikin simply required suctioning. Recognizing the need for a more interactive and realistic learning environment, Amy began to envision a wearable overlay that could provide authentic responses, thereby enhancing her students' understanding of patient care.
