The orange button on your Avband is an important safety and communication feature designed to empower your Standardized Patient (SP) during simulations. It provides a discreet, immediate way for the SP to notify the facilitator if assistance is need.
Important: The Avkin app must remain open and in the foreground on the provided tablet to receive these notifications. If the app is minimized or the tablet is locked, notifications will be suspended.
Quick Press: Attention Needed
If the SP quickly presses the orange button, the Avkin app will immediately notify the facilitator. This indicates the SP is experiencing a concern — either physical or psychological — and needs assistance. The facilitator should promptly check in with the SP to address the concern before continuing the simulation.
Press and Hold: Panic Response
If the SP presses and holds the orange button, this triggers a panic response. The Avkin app will send an urgent notification to the facilitator, indicating that the simulation should be paused or stopped immediately for the SP’s safety. After ensuring the SP is safe, the facilitator should conduct a debrief with the SP before deciding whether to resume the simulation.
What Happens in the App?
-
The Avkin app displays a notification when either a quick press or a press-and-hold action occurs.
-
The facilitator must manually tap to dismiss the notification in the app after addressing the concern.
-
Notifications are only active while the Avkin app is running in the foreground.
Safety Best Practice:
Before beginning any simulation, facilitators should:
-
Review how the orange button works with the SP.
-
Test the Avband connection and vibration intensity to suit the SP’s preference.
-
Ensure the Avkin app remains open and the phone or tablet is set not to auto-lock.
